Description

The Galfer Shark EVO is Galfer's two-piece Shark disc: a Shark friction ring on a CNC-machined aluminium core, available with an original Kashima coating, black anodised, or raw aluminium finish. It is 2.0 mm thick and available in 180, 203, and 223 mm for 6-bolt hubs.

Features

  • Two-piece: Shark friction ring, riveted to an aluminium core with 8 mm rivets
  • Core made of 7075-T6 aluminium, fully CNC-machined – according to Galfer, this provides high lateral stiffness for even pad wear
  • New Shark friction ring with a larger contact surface and more fins and cutouts for cooling
  • According to Galfer, compatible with all pad models
  • Thickness 2.0 mm
  • Core in three colours: Kashima (original Kashima coating), black anodised, or raw aluminium
  • According to Galfer, includes a cutout for an e-bike speed sensor magnet. You'll find screw-on magnets under Galfer e-bike magnet.
  • 6-bolt mount, includes mounting bolts

Which size fits?

Galfer categorises the sizes as follows:

  • 180 mm: XC and Enduro
  • 203 mm: Enduro and Downhill
  • 223 mm: Downhill and E-Bike

Whether and which adapter is necessary depends on the brake mount on your fork or frame and the disc size it was designed for without an adapter. Galfer offers post-mount adapters +20 mm, +23 mm, +43 mm, and +63 mm. The maximum disc size is specified by the fork and frame manufacturers.

Riding a Fox 40 and want to go from 203 to 223 mm at the front? You need the Galfer post-mount adapter +20 mm for Fox 40.

Which colour?

The three versions differ in the colour of the core. The Kashima version colour-matches suspension components with a Kashima coating, such as those from Fox. Black and raw aluminium are the more subtle variants.

6-bolt or Center Lock?

For Center Lock hubs, there is the Galfer Shark EVO Center Lock. The one-piece version is the Galfer Shark 6-bolt.

What's in the box

1 brake disc including 6 mounting bolts, so there's no need to order new bolts. For front and rear, order 2 discs.

Matching pads

A new disc is best paired with new pads so both bed in cleanly together. Pads for your brake: Shimano · SRAM & Avid · Magura · Hope & Trickstuff · Formula · Hayes · TRP

Installation

  • Mounting bolts are included. Tighten them in a cross pattern to the torque specified by your hub or brake manufacturer.
  • Keep the disc and pads free of grease; Galfer Brake Cleaner is suitable for cleaning.
  • Bedding in new discs: on a flat, safe section of path, brake several times from medium speed to walking pace, using each brake individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference compared to the Shark?

The Shark is one-piece stainless steel. The Shark EVO has a new friction ring with more cooling surface, which is riveted to an aluminium core. According to Galfer, this provides more cooling and stiffness.

Does the disc fit my brake?

Generally, yes. The decisive factors are the 6-bolt mount on the hub and the correct adapter for the diameter. The disc is 2.0 mm thick – check whether your brake caliper is suitable for this.

When do I need to change the disc?

When it falls below the minimum thickness specified by the disc or brake manufacturer, is warped, or has deep grooves. Measure the thickness with a micrometer at several points in the middle of the braking surface.

Do I need new pads with a new disc?

Highly recommended, especially if the old pads are heavily worn or glazed. New discs and new pads break in best together. You can find suitable pads in our brake pad buying guide.

We supply Galfer brake discs from our Swiss warehouse. Unsure which size or mount fits? Send us your fork, frame, and brake details – we will tell you what fits.
