Tubeless on your MTB: what you need for the conversion

Tubeless means: tyres without an inner tube, sealed with rim tape, a tubeless valve, and tyre sealant. This allows for lower pressure and more grip, without pinch flats. At MTB-Raceshop, you will find rim tape, valves, tyre sealant, pluggers, and tyre levers.

  • Rim tape: covers the spoke holes airtight. The width depends on the inner width of the rim.
  • Tubeless valve: seals the valve hole with a rubber cone. You also use the valve to inject the tyre sealant.
  • Tyre sealant: seals small holes while riding.
  • Plugger: seals larger holes on the trail using a rubber plug.

A strong blast of air helps with installation, ensuring the tyre beads into the rim flange – for example with the Topeak JoeBlow Boosterfrom the Pumpscategory. For tight tyres, there is the Topeak Shuttle Lever 1.2tyre lever.

Frequently asked questions about tubeless

Which tubeless rim tape do I need?

The decisive factor is the inner width (rim width) of your rim. Depending on the manufacturer of the rim and the tape, choose a tape that is the same width or a few millimetres wider. Apply it tightly and without wrinkles.

How often do I need to refill the tyre sealant?

Tyre sealant dries out over time, faster in warm conditions. Check it regularly and refill it, at the latest when small holes no longer seal or the tyre loses air more quickly.

Do I need special tubeless valves?

Yes. A standard tube valve does not seal against the rim. Tubeless valves have a rubber cone and a nut that press them into the valve hole. Choose the length to match the rim depth.
