Park Tool: tools from Minnesota for every bike workshop

Park Tool makes the blue tools you'll see hanging on the wall in many bike workshops. It all started in a bike shop in St. Paul, Minnesota (USA): the owners Howard Hawkins and Art Engstrom built a repair stand, which came onto the market in 1963 as the PRS-1. That became Park Tool, which today offers several hundred tools for professional and home workshops.

Park Tool is also known for its guides: on its website and on YouTube, Park Tool shows almost every bike repair step by step.

Park Tool tools at MTB-Raceshop

BBT-69.4 – bottom bracket and Centerlock

Tool with 16 notches for external bearing bottom brackets such as Shimano Hollowtech II, SRAM GXP or FSA MegaExo and for external-spline Centerlock lockrings. Machined from aluminium, with a 3/8-inch square drive for ratchet and torque wrench.

PP-1.2 – pushing back brake pistons

The flat, 25 mm wide wedge pushes the pistons of hydraulic disc brakes evenly back into the caliper – when changing pads or when the pads rub.

DT-2.2 – truing brake discs

Truing fork with three slots for discs up to 2.5 mm thick. Use it to bend a warped disc back until nothing rubs any more.

BMT-1 – freeing tubeless tyres

Pliers that free stuck tyres from the rim hook with little effort. For tyre widths from 23 to 78 mm, with coated jaws that leave no marks.

CBW-1 – open-end spanner 8/10 mm

Slim open-end spanner for small nuts on brakes, rear derailleur and hose connections, only 3.2 mm thick.

Which Park Tool tool do you need?

  • Changing brake pads: the PP-1.2 makes room for the new pads.
  • Brake rubs on every revolution: usually the disc is warped, and the DT-2.2 will sort it.
  • Changing a bottom bracket or Centerlock disc: the BBT-69.4 fits bottom brackets and lockrings with 16 notches.
  • Tubeless tyre stuck: the BMT-1 frees the bead without wrecking your thumbs.
  • Small 8 or 10 mm bolts, e.g. the brake hose connecting bolt: CBW-1.

Will it fit your bike?

  • BBT-69.4: external bearing bottom brackets with 16 notches and an outer diameter of around 44 mm (Shimano Hollowtech II, SRAM/Truvativ GXP, FSA MegaExo, Race Face X-Type, Hope, Chris King, Campagnolo) and external-spline Centerlock lockrings. Not for press-fit bottom brackets, cassette lockrings or internal-spline Centerlock lockrings.
  • PP-1.2: most hydraulic disc brakes. According to Park Tool, not for calipers with ceramic pistons, as fitted by Shimano on its road bike disc brakes.
  • DT-2.2: all brake discs up to 2.5 mm thick.
  • BMT-1: tyre widths from 23 to 78 mm (0.9 to 3 inches).
  • Not sure? Send us the model of your bottom bracket, hub or brake and we'll check it for you.

Tips for the home workshop

Stick to the torque

Tighten bottom bracket cups and Centerlock lockrings to the torque specified by the manufacturer. The BBT-69.4 has a 3/8-inch square drive for this, so you can fit your torque wrench directly.

Keep your brakes clean

When changing pads or truing the disc, never touch the braking surfaces with your fingers. Grease and skin oils reduce braking performance. Clean contaminated discs with brake cleaner from Cleaning & care.

Look after your tools

Wipe your tools after use and store them dry. Greasy or dirty jaws and notches are more likely to slip.

Frequently asked questions about Park Tool

Where does Park Tool come from?

Park Tool comes from St. Paul, Minnesota (USA). The founders Howard Hawkins and Art Engstrom ran a bike shop there and built their first repair stand, the PRS-1, in 1963. Today Park Tool makes several hundred tools for workshops in more than 70 countries. The signature blue is protected as a trademark.

Does the Park Tool BBT-69.4 fit Shimano Hollowtech II?

Yes. The BBT-69.4 fits external bearing bottom brackets with 16 notches, including Shimano Hollowtech II, SRAM/Truvativ GXP, FSA MegaExo, Race Face X-Type, Hope and Chris King. It also undoes external-spline Centerlock lockrings. For internal-spline lockrings and for the cassette, you need a cassette tool.

How do I true a bent brake disc?

Spin the wheel and find the spot where the disc rubs. Then slide the truing tool, such as the Park Tool DT-2.2, over the edge of the disc and bend the disc back in small steps. Check after each step and don't touch the braking surface with your fingers. If the disc is badly bent, you're better off replacing it.

How do I get a stuck tubeless tyre off the rim?

Let all the air out, then push the tyre bead into the rim well all the way round. If the tyre is stuck fast, the Park Tool BMT-1 helps: it clamps onto the tyre sidewall and pushes the bead into the rim well with one pull on the handle. Then remove the tyre with tyre levers.

Why not just use a screwdriver to push back the brake pistons?

A screwdriver presses on a single point and can damage the pistons, seals or pads. The Park Tool PP-1.2 has a wide, flat wedge that spreads the force evenly and pushes the pistons back straight.
