When children or fellow riders run out of energy on a trip or a mechanical issue ends the ride, the kommit bike towing system helps: a self-retracting 2-meter tether under the saddle, designed for a pulling load of up to 120 kg. It is accompanied by the Bike Bungee, the Bike Mount, and the Multisport Clip.

We will advise you on installation, compatibility, and safe use – so that your shared tour remains relaxed.

kommit: the bike tow system from Bavaria

kommit is a manufacturer of self-retracting tow systems based in Treuchtlingen, Bavaria. On the market since 2020, the company is known for the kommit bike tow system: a 2-meter-long cord that sits under the saddle and can withstand a towing load of up to 120 kg.

The concept: If your children or partner run out of energy during a ride or a mechanical issue ends their trip, you can simply tow them along. This allows you to extend a tour by several kilometres and ensures everyone gets home together. The tow system is developed, designed, and assembled in Bavaria.

kommit tow system and accessories: what do you need?

Bike tow system

The centerpiece: 2 m nylon cord based on parachute technology, self-retracting, with a carabiner and rubberized loop. Mounts under the saddle without tools, supports a towing load of up to 120 kg.

Bike Bungee

Elastic adapter for the handlebars of the towed bike. The bungee effect cushions jerks when starting – more comfortable for children, tired riders, and on e-bikes. Supports a towing load of up to 120 kg.

Bike Mount

For bikes without stem clamp bolts, such as those with an integrated cockpit or some children's bikes: a mount with an SP Connect Micro Bike Mount for the handlebars, which secures the tow loop.

Multisport Clip

Clip with outdoor strap: Allows you to attach the tow system to a waist belt, backpack, or frame – for ski touring, hiking, jogging, or on a cargo bike.

How the kommit bike tow system works

1. Mount under the saddle

Feed the webbing around the saddle rails and tighten; no tools required. With dropper posts, ensure at least 5 cm of clearance remains even when the post is retracted.

2. Attach while stationary

Secure the loop to the stem of the towed bike and hook in the carabiner. If there are no stem bolts, the Bike Mount helps, while the Bike Bungee ensures a smoother start.

3. Tow smoothly

Start moving steadily, ride in single file, and maintain a maximum speed of 12 km/h. The retraction mechanism keeps the cord taut so it does not sag.

4. Detach while stationary

Stop, release the carabiner, and let the cord retract in a controlled manner. It retracts quickly – keep fingers and the rear wheel out of the way.

Safety when towing with kommit

A tow system alters the handling characteristics of both bikes. Follow kommit’s safety instructions:

  • Do not use on public roads.
  • Do not use downhill – the risk of falling increases.
  • Maximum 12 km/h and a maximum towing load of 120 kg.
  • Attach and detach the cord only while stationary.
  • Always ride one behind the other, never side-by-side; no one must cross the line.
  • Avoid jerky starts – the person being towed should pedal along when starting.

The person being towed must remain active: keep pedaling, steering, and be ready to brake. With heavier riders and on steep ramps, the handling changes noticeably. Practice attaching and detaching on flat ground before your first tour – especially with children.

Compatibility: Which bikes does kommit fit?

  • Towing bike: Saddle with saddle rails – this allows the tow system to fit most MTBs, gravel, and trekking bikes, as well as e-bikes. Alternatively, it can be attached to a luggage rack or to the frame using the Multisport Clip.
  • Towed bike: Stem with clamp bolts for the loop. If the stem does not have any, you need the kommit Bike Mount.
  • The kommit Bike Bungeefits every tow system with a loop.
  • Off the bike: With the kommit Multisport Clipand outdoor strap, you can attach the tow system to a waist belt or backpack.
