Öhlins Coil Kit – Coil Spring Conversion for RXF36, RXF38, and DH38

The Öhlins Coil Kit converts your Öhlins RXF36 m.3, RXF38 (m.2 and m.3), or DH38 (m.1 and m.2) from an air spring to a coil spring. It replaces the air cartridge with a coil shaft and a top cap with adjustable preload. Thanks to the design of the Öhlins air cartridge, you can convert back to an air spring at any time.

Advantages of the coil spring

• Less friction and more sensitive response to small bumps
• Almost no maintenance on the spring side
• Less dependent on temperature and altitude than an air spring
• Travel adjustable in 10 mm increments: Simply reposition the bolt on the piston rod

Versions and travel

• RXF36 m.3: 140 to 160 mm travel
• RXF38 m.2/m.3: 130 to 180 mm travel, factory set to 170 mm
• DH38 m.1/m.2: 160 to 200 mm travel, factory set to 200 mm

The coil shaft is not interchangeable between fork models—choose the version that matches your fork. The RXF36 m.3 kit does not fit the RXF36 m.1 or m.2: For these, there is the Coil Shaft Kit and Coil Preload Adjuster available separately. For other Öhlins forks, contact us with the model and serial number, and we will check compatibility.

Order spring separately

The spring is not included. Öhlins offers them in seven rates from 40 to 70 lbs (7.0 to 12.4 N/mm): Spring for RXF36 m.3 · Spring for RXF38 · Spring for DH38. Which rate is right for you depends on your rider weight including gear and your riding style—we are happy to help you choose.

Installation

Installation requires special tools from Öhlins. The easiest way is to let us do it: We will install the kit and mount the spring if you order it at the same time.

Options

• Installation by MTB-Raceshop: If you select "Yes," we will install the coil kit into your fork—order the matching spring at the same time. To do this, choose your drop-off date. Your fork must reach us by the working day before at the latest – or bring it to Dällikon by arrangement.
• Shipping: With "Shipping label," you will receive a prepaid Swiss Post label via PDF by email—simply print it, stick it on the package, and drop it off at the post office. If you don't have a suitable box, you can purchase one from us by selecting "Fork box." If you are dropping the fork off in person or shipping it yourself, select "Self-organised." If you don't need installation, select "Not needed."

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert back to an air spring?

Yes. The fork can be converted between air and coil springs as often as you like. So, keep the air cartridge in a safe place.

Air or coil spring—what is better?

The coil spring is more sensitive and requires almost no maintenance, but it is heavier. You can only change the spring rate by swapping to a different spring, and Öhlins springs are linear. The air spring can be adjusted more finely. If you adjust your setup often, it is better to stick with air. If you have found your ideal spring and just want to ride, the coil spring is the right choice.
